It would be very useful to have a command that assigns the description of an item to a specified string, especially in the context of post-battle "you have a(|n) 'x'!" textboxes and custom menu scripts.

The way that I think this feature would be most useful would be to have a command that works like this: "item description(item, string)".
However, actually "knowing" what is in the inventory could be difficult, but it's worth it to me to be able to equip the item while knowing its description -- the equip screen doesn't display tags or bitsets.
