Tengu

Description : James Paige Nov/Dec 2002
Clay Sculpture - High-fire, Hopkin's White clay
The Tengu, a Japanese goblin. I am quite happy with this piece, in spite of the severe cracking (most of which you cannot see in this picture) Hopkin's White clay is a smooth brittle clay better suited to small work, not medium sculpture. Out of all the pieces I made with this clay, only one did not crack at all, and it was less than half the size of this one. Also, it suddenly occurs to me that I have absolutely no idea if Tengus are really supposed to have birdlike tails or not. I imagine not. Call it artistic license, eh? :)
